Parents, not Downing Street should decide if children use social media

The Consumer Choice Center has urged the UK government to base decisions on evidence when considering restrictions on children’s social media access, contending that parents rather than politicians are best suited to make these determinations for their families.

This debate emerged after the UK government did not dismiss an Australian-style ban for under-16s. Secretary of State Liz Kendall indicated that “a blanket ban remains on the table” regarding youth social media use.

The issue has attracted international attention following reports that the US administration has discouraged Downing Street from pursuing measures similar to Australia’s approach to youth social media restrictions.

Mike Salem, UK Country Associate at the Consumer Choice Center, stated that “parents remain best placed to guide and support their children’s use of technology,” emphasizing that uniform bans fail to account for individual maturity levels and family circumstances.
