Consumers applaud Carney government’s removal of some retaliatory tariffs on U.S.

Ottawa, ON: Today, the Canadian government announced plans to remove tariffs placed on goods coming into Canada from the United States that comply with the CUSMA. The Consumer Choice Center (CCC) is applauding this move and is calling on both the Carney government and the Trump administration to return to the negotiating table to eliminate as many tariffs on both sides as possible.

“Tariffs are taxes, plain and simple,” said Jay Goldberg, Canadian Affairs Manager at the Consumer Choice Center. “The fact that the Carney government is taking steps to reduce tariffs imposed on American goods coming into Canada is a good thing for Canadian consumers.  Both countries should be focused on getting back to the negotiating table, removing trade irritants on both sides of the relationship, and working toward getting a deal to lower tariffs across the board.”

The end goal for both sides in the current trade dispute should be reducing tariffs and eliminating them wherever possible, in order to get prices back down for consumers and let consumers decide on what products they want to buy wherever they choose to shop.

“There are simply no advantages to tariffs,” said Sabine Benoit, the CCC’s Canadian Policy Associate. “Prime Minister Mark Carney’s move to reduce tariffs that were placed on the United States is a step in the right direction for Canadians already dealing with an affordability and housing crisis. Let’s hope this begins a process of more tariff reductions on both sides of the border before an economic crisis and prevents further deterioration in the crossborder relationship.”
