Carney must go further than delaying electric vehicle mandate and end it: Consumers

The Consumer Choice Center is calling on the Carney government to fully repeal its electric vehicle mandate, as the government announced today it would delay the phase-in of its plans pending a government review.

“Delaying the electric vehicle mandate is a good first step, but the Carney government needs to go further and scrap the mandate entirely,” said Jay Goldberg, Canadian Affairs Manager at the Consumer Choice Center. “Consumers deserve to choose what kind of vehicle they want to buy, be it electric, hybrid, or gasoline powered. The government should end its electric vehicle mandate, full stop.”

Before today’s announcement, the federal government was poised to require car dealers to sell at least 20 per cent of all new cars as electric starting next year. This was scheduled to ramp up to 60 per cent in 2030 and to 100 per cent by 2035.

“Automakers have said the electric vehicle mandate would decimate the auto sector in Canada,” added Goldberg. “With only 7.9 per cent of all new cars sold in June being electric, reaching these targets would have been impossible for automakers. Delaying the mandate is an important step, but ending it entirely is what is ultimately needed for the sake of Canada’s economy and consumer choice.”
