MALAYSIA has now demonstrated that it has the capacity to attract, accommodate and realise large-scale data centre investments. Those investments are arriving at remarkable speed.
By the first half of 2026, Malaysia had recorded RM385.7bil in data-centre-related investments since 2021, according to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).
Major players such as AWS, Microsoft, Google, Bridge Data Centres, DayOne, AirTrunk and Vantage have either established or expanded their operations, particularly in Greater Kuala Lumpur and Johor.
The question is no longer simply whether Malaysia can become a regional data centre hub.The more important question is whether this boom can generate lasting and sustainable economic value without leaving households and smaller businesses to bear costs created by large-scale users.
