A West-East pipeline would be good news for Canadian consumers
Toronto, ON: Earlier today, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced plans to advance a new pipeline from Alberta to Ontario called the Northern Shield Energy Corridor. The Consumer Choice Center sees this move as a positive development and an important step in further unlocking Canada’s energy potential and bringing down costs for consumers.
Jay Goldberg, the CCC’s North American Affairs Manager, commented on the announcement.
“For far too long, governments have stood in the way of allowing Alberta energy to get to market, whether it be for exports abroad or to power refineries here at home. Today’s announcement represents yet another sign that governments outside of Alberta are finally taking the need to develop Canada’s domestic energy resources seriously. This new West-East pipeline would move 500,000 barrels of oil per day from Alberta to Ontario, allowing Alberta oil to be refined in Ontario and opening up the possibility of connecting Alberta’s energy sector to European markets. This will boost Canada’s economy, bring down energy costs for consumers, and allow more of Canada to be powered by domestic energy sources. If this pipeline gets built, it will be positive news for Canadians from coast to coast,” said Goldberg.
