Ottawa, ON: The Ford government yesterday tabled legislation that helps remove various barriers stopping developers from more efficiently building homes in Ontario, helping tackle the crippling housing crisis facing Ontarians. The Ford government plans to standardize various codes and processes among municipalities and make development more financially feasible, allowing for the expansion in housing Ontario needs in order to meet demand.
Sabine El-Chidiac of the Centro de Escolha do Consumidor, an international consumer advocacy group, responded to the Ford government’s commitment on housing:
“It’s great to see the Ontario government take action that will actually allow developers to build more efficiently. The Consumer Choice Center has long advocated for streamlining and financial feasibility for development and zoning, and that’s exactly what Ontario consumers want to see: a plan that can eventually lead to lower house prices for people like millennials who see home ownership as a lost cause.”
As the Ford government noted, the province is not currently on track to meet its goal of getting 1.5 million homes built over 10 years. That means this legislation must work to make it easier for developers to build, which is the best way to tackle the housing crisis.
“Everything must be done so that Ontarians can see shovels in the ground as soon and as often as possible because consumers are at their breaking point. The Ford government is acting to make the housing market more efficient through this legislation.”
