GENERATIONAL SMOKING BAN:

Rishi's new proposal aims to stop legal adults from buying cigarettes, Shisha tobacco, or even the less harmful Heat-Not-Burn products. That’s absurd. New Zealand's incoming government just announced that they will scrap a similar bill.

THE ABSURDITY:

Anyone born on or after the 1st of January 2009 would not be allowed to buy anything the government considers to be tobacco products in their LIFETIME. Imagine two friends on New Year's Eve 2050: One is a day older than the other and allowed to smoke a cigar, and the other is merely allowed to watch despite being 40 years old.

VAPING FLAVOURS:

Over 90% of vapers use non-tobacco flavours. The government is considering stringent restrictions on various vape flavours, which would undo the decade-long success that have led to a drop in smoking rates in the UK.

DISPOSABLE VAPES:

Smokers often try first disposable vaping products before selecting a vape device they want in the long-term. By banning disposables, Rishi will shut another door to smart harm reduction.

THESE MEASURES ARE JUSTIFIED BY FIGHTING YOUTH SMOKING AND VAPING.
BUT THAT MISSES THE POINT:

According to the NHS, only 1% of pupils were smokers in 2021, that's down from 13% in the mid-1990s!

The UK's liberal approach towards harm reduction has helped millions of smokers to quit and provided an enviable international model. A change of policy would drive converted vapers back to cigarettes.

Bans and prohibition don't work, and rather drive consumers to the black market. Will the next Al Capone make a fortune thanks to generational smoking bans, or the next Pablo Escobar achieve success due to the demand for disposable vapes? This plan is a boon for mobsters and a loss for consumers.

History has shown this over and over again. Illegal products aren't subject to product safety rules and are much more harmful to consumers than legal ones.

Other countries such as New Zealand and Malaysia have just reversed course and abandoned their plans for a Generational Ban. Rishi isolates the UK with his proposed Generational Ban.

IT'S JUST NOT FAIR:

Current lawmakers making rules for future adults is anything but just. Discriminating against adult consumers, depending on what year they were born, is unheard of and would set a dangerous precedent for future regulations.
What's next? Alcohol? Sugar? Fat?
We can only imagine.

Say 'No2Prohibition' now and write your local MP to oppose this giga-ban package.

Have your voice heard as a consumer and let the UK remain a country where consumers can choose!

SOME FACTS YOUR
MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT SHOULD LISTEN TO:

1) The proposed 'Generational Ban' lacks substantial supporting evidence: New Zealand's incoming Conservative government, decided to scrap a similar law introduced by the previous government. There's strong evidence that illegal tobacco trade undermines such bans, as seen in South Africa during strict COVID lockdowns (93% of smokers purchased tobacco on the black market during the ban of legal tobacco). Given the prevalence of illegal tobacco sales to minors in the UK, it's clear criminal sellers won't hesitate to target adults. 2) While smoking remains a health concern, rising non-communicable diseases like obesity and alcohol misuse pose challenges: Calls for extending 'tobacco-like' regulations to unhealthy foods and alcohol are increasing, despite initial promises that tobacco regulations wouldn't apply elsewhere. This trend sets a worrying precedent, dividing adult society into groups with varying rights and regulations.
3) The 'Generational Ban' effectively prohibits the sale of tobacco to adults, treating some as perpetual minors. It divides adult society, creating differing rights and rules: Over time, this law's effects may allow 50-year-olds to buy tobacco while denying this right to 49-year-olds.
