The annual European Railway Station Index is out, and Leipzig is on top – knocking London into third place

There are plenty of ways to measure the greatness of a railway station. The more destinations you can go, the better. Easy platform access and navigation: also essential. And, most important of all, you’ll want good dining options so you can stock up on travel snacks (and maybe grab a quick train beer).

Of course, many stations do not measure up to these criteria at all. In fact, plenty are dingy hellholes without even a single vending machine. But some are truly splendid – and that’s where the annual European Railway Station Index comes in.

Every year, this very important list ranks 50 or so major stations across the European continent according to those factors, and rail aficionados duly go wild over the results.

So which station came out top in 2021? That’d be the Hauptbahnhof (main station) in the German city of Leipzig. Researchers at the Consumer Choice Center chose it because it offered the highest number of domestic destinations and has an impressive array of shops and restaurants. Fair play.

Last year’s winner, London’s St Pancras terminus, was knocked down into third place. Which is nothing to do with Brexit, probably. Rounding out the top five, Vienna Hauptbahnhof came second and Amsterdam Centraal and Moscow Kazansky joint fourth.

Der Leipziger Hauptbahnhof ist auch unter den deutschen Bahnhöfen nicht der meistbesuchte und auch nicht im europäischen Vergleich – und doch gelangte der über hundertjährige Bau auf einen Spitzenplatz. Als bester Bahnhof Europas wurde er in einem Ranking gekürt, welches die Sicht der Passagiere im Blick hat.

»Auch wenn man vom Leipziger Hauptbahnhof aus nicht ins Ausland reisen kann, bietet der Bahnhof die meisten inländischen Ziele und eine Vielzahl von Geschäften und Restaurants«, urteilen die Verfasser des European Railway Station Indizes. Er »wird von mehreren Bahngesellschaften genutzt, was ihn unter den Top fünf hervorhebt.«

Für den Index nahm die internationale Verbraucherschutzorganisation Consumer Choice Center 50 Stationen unter die Lupe. Bewertungskriterien waren etwa die Anzahl der angefahrenen nationalen und internationalen Ziele, der Zugang zu den Bahnsteigen – auch für Rollstuhlfahrer:innen, Angebot an Lounges und die Qualität der Einkaufs- und gastronomischen Angebote. Vor allem Bahnhöfe im Norden Europas gelangten in die Top Ten.

Auf Leipzig folgte der Wiener Hauptbahnhof auf Platz zwei, St. Pancras in London kam auf den dritten, Amsterdam Centraal und Moskau Kasaner Bahnhof gemeinsam auf den vierten Platz. Zwei weitere deutsche Bahnhöfe erreichten den fünften Platz: die Hauptbahnhöfe in Frankfurt am Main und München. Der Rest der Top 10 besteht aus Moskau Kursker Bahnhof (sechster Platz), Milano Centrale (siebter Platz), Birmingham New Street (achter Platz, vorher elfter Platz), Roma Termini (neunter Platz) sowie Paris-Montparnasse und Bologna Centrale (gemeinsamer zehnter Platz).

Unter den 50 getesteten Bahnhöfen waren noch einige weitere deutsche: Düsseldorf, Hannover und Stuttgart erreichten den 12. von insgesamt 26. Plätzen, Hamburg kam auf den 14., Köln, Berlin-Hauptbahnhof und Nürnberg auf den 15., Dortmund auf den 16., Essen und Bremen auf den 19., Berlin-Ostkreuz auf den 22., Berlin-Zoologischer Garten auf den 23. und Berlin-Friedrichstraße auf den 24. Platz.

Fazit der Verfasser: »Eine Reise an einem der Top-Ten-Bahnhöfe zu beginnen, verspricht eine bequemere Anreise zum Bahnhof und ein gutes bis sehr gutes Fahrgasterlebnis am Bahnhof.« Die Größe eines Bahnhofs bedeute »nicht unbedingt mehr Komfort oder eine bessere Infrastruktur«. Einige der größten Bahnhöfe wie Paris-Nord, Madrid Atocha oder Châtelet – Les Halles in Paris hätten es nicht einmal unter die ersten zehn geschafft.

Das Consumer Choice Center mit Sitz in Washington DC hat den Index zum zweiten Mal erstellt. Für ihre Bewertung zogen die Prüfer unter anderem Daten von den Webseiten der Bahnhöfe und Online-Statistiken heran.

Die meisten Bahnhöfe sind Durchgangsstationen, an denen die meisten Reisenden nicht lange bleiben möchten. Doch es gibt einige Stationen, die jede Menge Komfort und gute Anbindungen bieten. Dieser Index verrät sie.

Lange Zugreisen sind angesichts der Corona-Pandemie für die meisten Urlauber nur noch eine Erinnerung. Sobald das Reisen aber wieder ohne große Einschränkungen möglich ist, kann dieser Index helfen, den passagierfreundlichsten Bahnhof zu finden. Denn sollte es mal zu einer Verspätung, einem Streik oder Zugausfall kommen, bieten einige Bahnhöfe mehr Komfort als andere.

Dazu gehören das Einkaufserlebnis, die Barrierefreiheit an den Bahnsteigen und den Toiletten sowie die Sauberkeit. Genau das hat die Verbraucherschutz-Organisation Consumer Choice Center (CCC) bei 50 europäischen Bahnhöfen bewertet und so den alljährlichen Bahnhofsindex erstellt. Berücksichtigt wurden außerdem Faktoren wie die Erreichbarkeit des Bahnhofs, die Anzahl der Ziele und ob ein Bahnhof überfüllt ist.

Gemessen an der Anzahl der Passagiere pro Jahr an den Bahnsteigen, erhalten so beispielsweise Bahnhöfe mit weniger als vier Millionen Passagieren die höchste Punktzahl von 15. Keine Punkte gibt es hingegen bei mehr als 15 Millionen Passagieren pro Jahr, denn dann gilt der Bahnhof als überfüllt. Insgesamt kann in allen Kategorien maximal eine Punktzahl von 133 erreicht werden.

Der beste Bahnhof 2021 in Europa befindet sich in Leipzig

Auf diese Weise landete noch im vergangenen Jahr der Bahnhof St. Pancras in London auf dem ersten Platz – doch in diesem Jahr liegt ein deutscher Bahnhof an der Spitze. Der Leipziger Hauptbahnhof schafft es im Jahr 2021 auf Platz eins der Liste der besten Bahnhöfe Europas. Der Bahnhof bietet die meisten inländischen Ziele und eine Reihe von Geschäften und Restaurants, so das CCC. 

Auch weitere Bahnhöfe aus Deutschland schafften es in die Top Ten. Der Frankfurter Hauptbahnhof und der Münchner Hauptbahnhof teilen sich Platz fünf.

Cestujete rádi vlakem? Pak byste možná v budoucnu neměli minout Lipsko, kde mají nejlepší evropské nádraží. Vyplývá to z výsledků žebříčku European Railway Station Index 2021, který hodnotí největší železniční stanice na starém kontinentu. Rozhodujícími faktory jsou například množství obsluhovaných destinací, přístup na nástupiště nebo i stravovací možnosti.

Žebříček sestavuje společnost Consumer Choice Center, která na lipském hlavním nádraží ocenila zejména zařízení a služby. „Stanice nabízí největší počet domácích destinací a mimo to množství obchodů a restaurací. Nádraží navíc využívá několik železničních společností, díky čemuž v naší top pětce vyčnívá,“ okomentovala společnost výsledek.

Na druhém místě skončilo hlavní nádraží ve Vídní, třetí příčku má londýnské St. Pancras, které žebříčku v minulých letech dominovalo. O čtvrtou pozici se dělí Amsterdam Centraal a Moskva Kazansky, o pátou pak hlavní nádraží ve Frankfurtu a Mnichově.

Společnost Consumer Choice Center zdůraznila, že velikost nádraží při hodnocení nehraje zas tak podstatnou roli. Větší rozloha totiž automaticky neznamená i lepší infrastrukturu. „Některá největší evropská nádraží jako například Paris Gare du Nord nebo Madrid Atocha se ani nedostala do top desítky, když je řeč o zákaznické zkušenosti,“ uvedli autoři studie.

„Koronavirová krize značně omezila svobodné cestování v Evropě i na celém světě. Dlouhé jízdy vlakem se tak pro mnohé z nás staly pouhou vzpomínkou. Jak však postupuje očkování, máme důvod být optimističtí, protože se nám zřejmě znovu poštěstí v létě cestovat. Náš index železničních stanic proto může být pro mnohé užitečný,“ uzavřela společnost.

За да определят най-добрите влакови гари, изследователите проучват 51 от най-големите жп станции на Стария континент, като ги оценяват по фактори, като брой обслужвани вътрешни и международни дестинации, достъп до платформата и качество на заведенията за хранене.

На базата на тези данни е изготвена класацията, носеща името European Railway Station Index 2021, посочва Daily Mail.

Виенската Hauptbahnhof заема втората позиция, St Pancras е на трето място, а Amsterdam Centraal на четвърто.

Германия доминира сред държавите в класацията, като три гари, разположени на нейна територия, намират място в Топ 10.

Организацията, която стои зад класацията – Consumer Choice Center, посочва, че размерът на железопътната гара „не означава непременно повече удобство или по-добра инфраструктура“.

„Някои от най-големите гари, като Atocha в Мадрид или Chatelet-Les Halles в Париж, дори не попадат в топ 10 по отношение на положителните преживявания на пътниците”, се казва в доклада.

The Consumer Choice Center launched its second annual European Railway Station Index, highlighting the top 50 railway stations in Europe ranked by passenger-friendliness.

The index should be used to inform both consumers and administrators as to who is doing the best job accommodating passengers.

The top 5 railway stations according to the index are Leipzig Hauptbahnhof, Wien Hauptbahnhof, St. Pancras (last year’s winner moved a bit down which can also be explained by the limited Eurostar services), and Amsterdam Centraal and Moscow Kazansky.

Maria Chaplia, Research Manager at the Consumer Choice Center, said: “As consumers across Europe rush to book business trips and vacations post-COVID, our European Railway Index will come in handy.”

“Although travelling overall seems like a dream from the past now, there is light at the end of the tunnel. With the release of our annual index, we also want to remind consumers that train travel will become a thing again. High points were awarded to the stations that offered great destinations around the continent, but also a healthy mix of shops, restaurants, and conveniences found at the station. For this year’s index, we removed cleanliness, signage and strike days to make sure that our results are rigid and unbiased,” said Chaplia.

“Leipzig Hauptbahnhof in Leipzig, Germany leads the list of best railway stations in Europe. Leipzig Hauptbahnhof, the station offers the greatest number of domestic destinations and an array of shops and restaurants. Several different railway companies use Leipzig Hauptbahnhof which made it stand out in the top 5.

“The point system we developed for this index provides great insight into what railway stations you should consider using on your next trip, whether for holiday or work,” said Chaplia.

“In order to prevent a negative passenger experience and pick the optimal hubs for future trips, we examined Europe’s 50 largest railway stations (by passenger volume) and ranked them in terms of passenger experience, ranked according to a mix of factors ranging from location and transportation options to in-station experience and domestic and international connections,” added Chaplia.

The best train stations in Europe have been revealed – and London St Pancras has lost its title to Leipzig Hauptbahnhof in Germany.

The European Railway Station Index 2021 scores 51 of Europe’s biggest railway stations to come up with the ultimate ranking.

Looking at various factors which contribute towards a better customer experience, the Consumer Choice Center puts together the annual report.

While St Pancras was crowned the number one station in 2020, this year it has dropped two spots to third place.

Second after Leipzig was Vienna Hauptbahnhof, with Amsterdam Centraal and Moscow Kazansky joint fourth and the main stations in Germany’s Frankfurt and Munich coming joint fifth respectively.

Factors that determine stations’ positions include the number of domestic and international destinations served, platform access and the quality of dining options.

St Pancras lost out in part because of the pandemic, which resulted in widescale cutbacks to its Eurostar services.

The index authors commended Leipzig’s facilities for passengers.

“The station offers the greatest number of domestic destinations and an array of shops and restaurants,” reads the report.

“Several different railway companies use Leipzig Hauptbahnhof, which made it stand out in the top five.”

Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, Magenta station in Paris came in last place, with the lowest score.

Other UK inclusions are Birmingham New Street (eighth), London Victoria and London Bridge (joint 11th), London Euston (12th), London Waterloo (17th) and London Liverpool Street (19th).

Glavni željeznički kolodvor u Leipzigu je proglašen najboljim kolodvorom u Europi u 2021. godini prema analizi takozvanog europskog indeksa željezničkih postaja koju je obradio Consumer Choice Center.

“Kolodvor nudi najveći broj domaćih destinacija, ali i lepezu trgovina i restorana. Nekoliko različitih željezničkih kompanija koriste Leipzig Hauptbahnohof i zato se našao na vrhu ljestvice,” pojašnjeno je u službenom priopćenju.

Njemački željeznički kolodvor s trona je svrgnuo londonski St. Pancras koji se ove godine našao tek na trećem mjestu ljestvice, dok je srebrna medalja dana glavnom kolodvoru u Beču.

Da bi došli do popisa najboljih željezničkih kolodvora Consumer Choice Center proučavao je pedesetak najznačajnijih kolodvora na Starom kontinentu. Analiziralo se sve od kvalitete signalizacije i pristupu platformama do gastro ponude.

Treba istaknuti velik kolodvor nije jamstvo i dobro organiziranog mjesta s moćnom infrastrukturom. Naprotiv, u prvih 10 najboljih željezničkih kolodvora nisu uvršteni giganti poput pariškog Gare du Norda ili madridske Atoche.

Četvrto mjesto ljestvice najboljih kolodvora podijelili su Amsterdam Centraal i moskovski Kazinski, a šesto mjesto glavni kolodvor u Frankfurtu i Munchenu. U 10 najboljih nalazi se tri njemačka predstavnika, dva britanska, dva ruska, te po jedan iz Austrije, Nizozemske i Italije.
